Lap Top Feature

Andrea mentioned the Lap Top feature as being a pretty big hole in the project right now and I wanted to initiate a conversation as to what kinds of scenarios are possible and the consequences they have on the idea.

What does the Lap Top allow you to do - potential ideas...

1) Lap Top as a means of streaming content produced by the news organization itself.

2) Lap Top as a means for displaying internet safety tips/programming.

3) Lap Top as a means for playing user-created content (ex. mini-doc about a Girl Scout's project)

Another issue is if the news organization sends out the same video to every locker, or is there some sort of choice involved on the part of the kids. I almost feel it would be much easier for the news org. to send out the same chunk of video to everyone - what do you guys think?

What if the internet safety tips were like commercials between news clips? I think that if the lap top only plays internet safety info that it will be a huge buzz-kill to kids who think this application is making them cool like the myspace people they're cut off from.

Third, how would a user, say a local girl scout troop, get their little mini-doc about their project onto the laptop for other people to see? Would they just upload it and submit it to the news organization for review and see what happens?

If any of this is redundant and I somehow missed the info on the first go-around I apologize. Let me know what you guys are thinking.

  1. Christina I really like your ideas here. The one about interenet safety tips being used as "pauses" in between video clips is a great one. My only concern is that I don't know if it would exactly be a continuous thing ... what if all stories don't have video? How we inititally imagined it ... although by all means it can be changed/gotten rid of ... is if a story had a video component (or was just in itself a video story) it would get played on the screen. But how could we incorporate more continuous video to use this idea?

In terms of projects being distributed (ie Girl Scouts) we had talked about the group submitting them to the general site administrator and they will release it for everyone in the network to view. If this were to grow beyond one sponsor, the site admin could approve for it / release it so other networks could also see it (or at the very least, at least similar groups ie. one Girl Scout troop could view another group's interest project.

I hope this answers your questions .. don't worry about asking ones you already thing have been answered becuase since we wrote that outline things have been talked about / dicussed aloud and may have chnaged or what not. It's allowing us to find holes, and that's what we're looking for.

  2. I think that if a kid clicks on the lap top that it can open and play whatever latest chunk of video has been released by the news org. and then close when it's over. I don't think it can play continuously, there just wont be enought content (initially at least).

  3. I love it! Even if it is top stories only on the lap top. The idea itself is excellent. This would be a really effective way to present the news because I think kids are really into watching tv and interacting.

I was envisioning a member uploading a movie, to a specific group, liek how facebook has videos in groups. If it is a provate group, like a girl scout troop, perhaps the viedo could just be uploaded with the permission of the admin or even just by a person with no permission. Everyone in the small groups would know each other, so privacy would be less of an issue. In pre-set groups, a movie would have to be sent to the over-all site-admin to be approved.

I smell something, I think its a partnership with youtube.

  4. One question: Is the laptop going to always be present there, or only when you click on a video, i.e. how the notebooks pop out when you click on them?

  5. always present on the top shelf was the original thought but what are you thinking?

  6. I think if it just sits on the shelf the window might be really small. I was thinking you could click on it and it would come to the forefront. It's hard to explain, I need to find a good example of what I mean.

  7. I think Tyler's idea of the lap top opening and coming forward is the right choice if it means we get to have a bigger scree. If you think about it, you wouldn't put your lap top on the top shelf of your locker and then step back to watch it.
