Google Maps/Flickr/YouTube Mash-Up

So I don't know if any of you are familiar with the band Mogwai--they make experimental, instrumental rock music that is depressing and uplifting at the same time, and are one of my favorites. Early last year, they did a really cool thing to promote their new album and the subsequent tour. They set up a website that had a Google Maps API thing that plotted the cities on their tour, along with the routes in between (you could track their tour bus via GPS!). Each city's entry had a link to the venue website if they hadn't played the gig yet. If they HAD played the gig, it included a setlist and a little blog blurb full of dark Scottish humor supplied by the band...and even cooler, people could tag Flickr photos and Youtube videos from the show with a given code, and those would show up on the city's entry as well.

Sadly, it wasn't archived, so this description will have to do.

This link
, though, will take you to the Matador Records post where they announced it. Which might give a little better explanation.

Bands like Wilco and Radiohead have comprehensive, fan-run gigographies, that approach this, but none had an interface as cool as the Mogwai one. Besides, more obscure bands (like Mogwai themselves) don't have these cool fan-run websites. But...if there was a single source where people could upload setlists/reviews/tagged photos and videos themselves for ANY band, that could change. Make it entirely fan-run and give it a pre-made infrastructure, and it could take off. I envision it like RateYourMusic.com but for live shows instead of recordings. And you'll notice that RYM has all sorts of obscure stuff, because anyone can modify it. It's a great resource.

Best part about this idea is that it's just bringing together existing resources, so I don't even think the coding would be all that difficult.
