1st image: This is what it would look like when clicking on the notebook (aka your group). The finalized image wouldn't save and upload properly, so use your imagination. The open notebook is where the dialogue/chat/message board would go ... people discussing the topic (aka Hilary '08 or global warming). On the very right hand side, there would be a place for activism. This would be where updates regarding upcoming meetings, important dates, marches, meetings, etc. regarding the topic would occur. The tabs you see (ie different colors) would be discussions from the past days (so the one on top was the last one "commented on."
2nd image: This is the front of the locker. As you can see, the white space is where you would enter your locker combination (aka your password). We are still grappling with the idea of having a main log in page, because you somehow need to be identified (in a semi private way). Also, the name (now changed to Locker Talker) and the sponsor of the locker (in this case, the Lawrence Eagle Tribune).
3rd Image: The inside of your locker -- this is where complete customization comes in. On the left hand side is where you laptop sits in your locker. This has two purposes: 1. any news story with video components will be played through this screen. This also where Internet safety education (tips, etc) will come up. Below that is the sticky note feature ... people send you a note and you can chose to or not to accept it (see the Jon Taylor example). Below that are the notebooks which serve as the books (see above explanation for Image 1). The blank space is where Jordan's flipbook would fit in. On the right hand side of the page (the locker door) is the news storys that appear to you based on what notebook groups you are in. Click on them and the whole story will appear (or video on the computer screen). The rest is customization ... pictures, glittery things, stickers ... the MS angle. This is where it could be geared toward a boy (think camo or blue locker, sports stickers, hunting photos, I dunno...).
Two things we're continuing to look into our a username / password system beyond your lock combo (although we really don't want users to have to create another profile) and group administrators vs site administrators. There is a need to be connected with others through this site, as well as be identified on the message board for communication purposes of sharing ideas, but this needs to be done in utmost privacy.
Jordan ... the flip book can go in the blank space is what Kate and I were envisioning. Does that work for you? And Micah ... what do you want to do about your game?
The Note Book. It will be very much the same as the Flip Book things I posted here.
Some issues have been raised regarding privacy of these young girls. I would think that we should have a policy that started that Notebooks should either be completely private (much like a diary or journal is) or else tell the students that "Any notebooks containing relevant information about the user including address, phone number, full name, etc. should be kept on private, while others can be made public."
That at least saves our asses, and we can have an option to flag something in case the user puts that information up anyways.
The Notebooks probably wouldn't be as high of quality as the flip book and would have a little more bloggy aspect to them. I think a box at the bottom should be added so that the user can journal about something. Let's say their big sister or big brother makes it in the paper for high school sports, then they can put the picture in there with a link to the article and what they think about it.
It should also focus on dates more than the flipbooks do. Every page will be added to the notebook instead of being a separate one and each will have a date at the top. Again, making it more like a journal or diary than a random book. It also will focus on links to articles more than music like the flipbooks do.
If people can't visualize the Notebook from what I posted and the flipbooks, I can make one in paint or something on my computer, but the problem is that I'm at home now instead of school working for the weekend and don't have the stuff I need to get it done.
I love everything the girls posted so far and I think the Notebook idea slides in well as far as colors and stuff. It brings a little more newsyness to the site too.
Did you guys decide to go for the girl audience (as opposed to all middle school kids) - it's ok if you did, just be sure to be specific when describing the project
you need to say more clearly what the user will do adn figure out how to support those features - how do they join groups, how do they add pictures, how do they share news stories...
and i think this is important for this project - what is the news organization going to have to do to maintain this system? The more the users create, the less the news org will have to do (and the more content they can use from the site in the regular paper which brings more readers to the site)
As I said the other day, I think these mockups look great and really capture what you two have been talking about throughout this process.
I think there doesn't need to be a main login page - the way you have it set up now works really well - particularly since it's supposed to be a locker.
I do think that it seems to be a lot like what Facebook is allowing users to do with applications right now - what's setting it apart so that it's not just Facebook for young girls?
yesssssssssssssssss
ReplyDeletelove everthing about it... now I'm nervous to post my notebook thing. damn.
