Statistics on tween and teen girls

The two sections of information are both from Pew Center studies (through the Internet department).
The first one:
"Generation IM: Teens and Technology"
Pew Internet Research Study by Amanda Lenhart
63% of Americans go online
78% of youth 12-17 go online
  • 92% of online youth use email
  • 84% "surf the net for fun"
  • 71% used the Internet for a recent big school project
  • 74% use IM

In the 12-14 age group:
66% go online and use IM (compared to 81% of 15-17 year olds)
21% of online youth have 4+ email addresses (this, combined with multiple scree names, is said to show different aspects of their personalities that they seem to express through online communication).

Second study:
"Teens and The Internet", Pew Internet, 6/11/06

88% of 12-14 year olds go online
57% of online teens "create content for the Internet" - this makes out to about 12 million youth - they do this through blogging, Web pages, and sharing stories, artwork, photos, video or remixing content already on the Internet):
33% share creations (art, photos, story, video)
32% create Web pages/blogs for others or for assignments
22% create their own personal site
19% create own online journal or blog
19% (1 in 5) remix content

I've also identified what seem to be three reoccurring problems/concerns regarding Internet use among this age group: cheating, bullying, and chatting inappropriately. I think in all the sites everyone has posted, the idea is to allow tween girls to express themselves creatively, allowing them to customize their choices. If there was a way to turn LockerStalker/ClickCliques into a news-based site that someone held onto these qualities, I think it would be going places...
