So I was going over the write-up that Andrea e-mailed everyone and I had questions/ideas.
If you look at Example 1 in the Initial Marketing vs. Add On section there is mention of a lap top option. Is this supposed to say flip book option? If not, I don't know what the lap top option is.
Also, the whole idea about an independent URL being available. It says we can have an independent URL and still avoid being considered a stand-alone site. Can you guys explain that to me again? Is it that they have to initially register through the news site and then can use the independent URL?
I had an idea about the whole post-it thing if people get uncomfortable about the potential for abuse (I personally am not worried about it, but who knows). The store I work for sells Webkinz and they make us watch terrible tutorial videos, and the way they manage to get away with having chat rooms is that the things kids can say are already pre-determined and put on a list that they have to choose from. I hope we wouldn't have to resort to such a thing, as Webkinz are for a younger age group, but it's just something to think about if we run into a snag.

1. The lap top and the flip book are two different features ... the flip book goes on the bottom shelf with the notebooks but is less news/information based .. it's designed as an opportunity to encourage sharing and creativity, which seem to be huge among this demograhpic based on other sites .. and it's particapatory in a way, even if not through news. the lap top is on the top shelf of the locker (refer to the mockups posted way back when). This serves two purposes: 1.) Any story that has video accompanied with it can be played on the "video screen" and 2.) used for Interent safety education training (this is something Kim mentioned as an idea and we picked up ... it's a HUGE hole right now if someone is interested in working through how that would work. Thanks for bringing it up, or I would have forgotten).
2. I could be wrong on your section question, so other people please offer your opinion, but this is my understanding and I think the original idea Kate and I had. Tyler's banner would appear on the Burlington Free Press Web site (for example) as a way of attracting parents and users of the Web site to explore further what Locker Talker is (in that case, do you think we should develop some short tag line or something to go along with this? Or maybe that wasn't the purpose of Tyler's banner ... but I know we had talked about such a banner/feature before). When you click on that banner, it would take you to the Locker Talker site However, returning users who have already registed, we feel, should be able to just type in a URL and circument the news sponsors site to access their locker. I hope that makes sense? HOWEVER, in typing this, I just realized that if we made the user access their locker through the new's organizations site, maybe they would take a few seconds to stop and read the headlines? What do people think?
3. I remember you talking about the Webkinz thing before, perhaps for another one of our original projects, and it was funny timing becuase I was just working on the privacy of the notes when I stopped to read this ... it definitely has possibilities and is a really good iea. I guess it depends on how many restrictions vs. how much freedom we want to give the users?
Hopefully this helps a little.
I like the idea of having the predetermined list. Perhaps it could be everyone in a persons small, private groups? This way, the groups personal admin has full controll over ho enters the group and thus who the people in the group are allowed to talk to. Would this work?
I think I'm confused now ... I thought the list CHristina was talking about was predetermined phrases or statements you could send to your friends (kind of like quick text in text messaging)? Was it referring to what Kate's talking about and who can enter grous? Sorry, you've just lost me on this one...
I was talking about the post-it notes having only pre-determined messages on them. I don't know how it would apply to groups.
The banners I made I intended to go on top of the Locker site itself. From the news org page, I think we would need to go with something smaller, although maybe those could be used as advertisements. Sorry if that was unclear.
For the post-its thing, do you mean that they would have pre-written things, like you could pick one that said "Good morning, just saying hi" or "Thanks for your homework help"? That's probably a good idea to prevent abuse, but it might be kind of underwhelming for the kids using it if their lockers just end up full of "Good morning, just saying hi" notes.
